First post in here

And again: After a longer break from work in 2014 that we both filled with travelling, we spent 3.5 years in Cologne. Recently we decided: Let’s do it again, let’s have a break, let’s travel. I quit my job in December 2017 and Britt will quit her job in January. Nowadays a sabbatical / time off is not looked upon as an epic mistake anymore. At least in Germany they are widely accepted and sometimes considered kind of sexy on your CV. Even at my recent workplace I was not the only one to abandon the work  for a longer break. Among my work colleagues, Lotte, leaving for 1 year starting in South Africa, and Kathrin, leaving to bicycle almost three months through New Zealand, I was actually the least exotic with my plans to go to Asia.

It was nice having approval to do a sabbatical. I remember in 2014 things were more difficult. But this time there was a new question to deal with: Family and friends wanted to know on how we will share our adventures. I guess in the era of social sharing and vloggers it is a reasonable thing to ask. My first intention was not doing anything in that regard. No obligations, just travelling. But I changed my mind when thinking it over with Britt.

Should we set up a travel blog?

yeah! 🙂 nope! 🙁
  • it’s fun
  • keeps family and friends posted about your whereabouts
  • sharing experiences and learnings with the world community
  • good mean to reflect experiences for yourself
  • great memory (like a diary though less personal)
  • gives some routine during the trip
  • chance of earning a little pocket money if you invest a lot of time or have a niche topic to blog about (we don’t)
  • if you are a designer or professional texter it could be a reference on your CV.
  • one gives away privacy
  • hosting is not free
  • it requires some time for set-up
  • the risk that writing could become an  obligation instead of fun

If you find yourself in a similar situation of whether you should write a travel blog or not, you might deal with the same questions.

End of story: As long as it is fun we will write – when it gets boring we will stop. So, here I am writing my first post – we decided to start with a blog and see where it goes. Apart from blogging about the upcoming trip we might recycle some old travel memories and stories we believe are worth sharing.

So stay tuned if you wish,

Alex

  1. Very cool! You did a better job than I did so far with writing a blog. Wish you all the best and enjoy as much as you can! Keep us updated 😉 Cheers, Lotte

    1. Hi Lotte,

Great to hear from you. Thank you for the comment.
We are in Sri Lanka now and social media is blocked. But I have seen that you are busy travelling too. Also looking forward to read more of your story, so keep us posted.

      Best
      Alex
