Pai and Chiang Rai – Our Last Days in Thailand

Bunny Cafe in Pai

After the trekking adventure came relaxing time!

Our next stop, the village of Pai was the perfect place to do so. It is a hippie town with a nice vibe, lots of bars and restaurants, surrounded by bungalows/huts for the backpacker community. Pai is beautifully situated between lush green mountains. Being such a backpacker spot, Pai had tons of activities to offer: hot springs, trekking, visiting serene waterfalls or exploring cute villages nearby. One could attend lots of classes from art, cooking to circus and, and, and. We stayed a couple of nights doing literally nothing. Well we visited a bunny cafe.  When we left after a couple of days we felt weak and exhausted from this motionless lifestyle.

Our last stop in Thailand took us to Chiang Rai.
This place felt more like an authentic city, not a tourism village. Less chic but more character. Though the region is one of the economically less developed in the country, the regions capital Chiang Rai felt like a western town, with busy people and lots of traffic during rush hours.

Trekking in Mae Hong Son: The Most Remote Place We’ve Ever Been To

Trekking is a big thing in north Thailand. In most towns 1, 2 or 3 day tours are offered. We normally trek alone but this time we hired a guide and signed up for a two-day trek.  It turned out to be the right decision because the trails barely recognizable and sometimes not there at all. We managed to get a good deal (cheap) because Mae Hong Son is not so touristy like other parts of Thailand.

It turned out to be one of the best trekking experiences we have made so far, taking us to very remote places.

Mae Hong Son and the Long Neck Karen

The next stop took us to Mae Hong Son. So far, everywhere we have gone in Thailand we have liked.  Mae Hong Son is same same but different! It is a very quiet town close the border of Myanmar. We encountered only very few tourists here. Those who link Thailand to mainstream mass tourism will have to change their view when coming to Mae Hong Son. It is always nice to be in places where visitors are appreciated and welcomed but not the main source of income for the people. In fact here the tourism sector felt really tiny.

Our Annapurna Circuit Trek Review

We arrived in Nepal at the beginning of May 2018. After making only a few preparations in Kathmandu (such as buying appropriately warm clothes) we headed to the Annapurna region to fulfill a longtime bucket list adventure: The Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Being considered as one of the best and cheapest (!) treks in the world, we kept this trek on our wishlist ever since experiencing Nepal for the first time. Spoiler upfront: We were not disappointed.

In this blog post we summarise our experiences on the Annapurna Circuit trek along with likes and dislikes. Of course there are also our lessons learned towards the end in case you want to tackle this trek yourself in the near future.

Our Annapurna Circuit Pics

Puh! We made it.

It took us 17 days to circuit the Annapurna region. With elevations starting just below 1000 meters to a literally breathtaking 5400 meters (Thorang-La Pass) our trek took us through all kinds of vegetation: jungles, stone deserts, river beds, snow paths, and and and.
In this post we gathered a small selection of memorable photos:

Delhi 2 Kathmandu

We spent three days in Delhi. We used the time to reunite with some old friends, do some souvenir shopping in the capital and of course to get organized after one month with (almost) no internet.

Thank you very much V. Family for having us. We had a great time in Delhi. Hope to see you again soon!

Next stop Nepal…

One Month on the Andaman Islands

The Andaman Islands were far, far away. It was not always easy to get around due to limited tourist infrastructure and because island hopping always meant stopping over in the less than spectacular Port Blair. BUT, the long waits and transfers were worth it!

Instead of visiting the touristy but beautiful Havelock, we went to the wild north, the distant Little Andaman (our personal highlight) and the very chill Neil island.
Every island had charm.
